President Joe Biden on Tuesday blasted what he referred to as a “radical” leaked draft opinion suggesting the Supreme Court is poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide, warning {that a} “complete range of rights” are in jeopardy if it holds.
Talking to reporters earlier just before boarding Air Force One, Biden stated he hoped the draft wouldn’t be finalized by justices, contending it depicts a “basic shift in American jurisprudence” that threatens “many fundamental rights” like privateness and marriage.
He added: “If this resolution holds, it’s actually fairly a radical decision.”
Earlier Tuesday, Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the leaked draft, reported by Politico, and mentioned he had ordered an investigation into what he referred to as an “egregious breach of trust.”
Within the excessive court docket’s first public remark since the draft was revealed late Monday, Roberts stated “Though the doc described in yesterday’s reviews is genuine, it doesn’t characterize a call by the Court docket or the ultimate place of any member on the problems within the case.”
In a press release, he mentioned, “To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the Court docket was meant to undermine the integrity of our operations, it won’t succeed.”
