Jane Foster has always been more than Odinson’s love interest. But you might not know that if you haven’t seen any of Marvel’s Thor films – the most recent of which she just wasn’t in. According to the first trailer, Thor: Love & Thunder intends to solve that and then some.
For the most part, the first teaser for Love and Thunder does its best to catch you up on everything Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) has been up to. Since he and the rest of the Avengers defeated Thanos in Endgame. Thor has been off gallivanting with the Guardians of the Galaxy, working off his depression weight, and making the most of his life as one of the few living Asgardians, with the Mad Titan gone and peace mostly restored.
Taika Waititi, who directed the well-received “Thor: Ragnarok,” will direct the fourth instalment in the “Thor” series. The film follows “Avengers: Endgame,” which left Thor Odinson adrift following the destruction of his country Asgard, leaving Earth in the hands of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The teaser shows him as a member of the squad, with Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel, who are all slated to reprise their roles. Previous MCU performers Tessa Thompson and Waititi himself — as the rock gladiator Korg — will both return for the film. but the teaser’s biggest moment comes in the last seconds, when Portman’s Jane Foster is revealed to be the new Mighty Thor.
Interestingly, Thor doesn’t seem to interact much with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). The rest of the surviving Asgardians who are attempting to rebuild their society in the Norwegian town formerly known as Tnsberg. While Thor is exploring space with Korg (Taika Waititi), Valkyrie’s new role as New Asgard’s leader looks to have unexpectedly led to a life of bureaucratic drudgery that keeps her away from combat. In stark contrast to Val and Thor, who appear to be taking a more easygoing approach to things, Love and Thunder’s teaser also introduces an upgraded Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who summons Mjolnir in the midst of a battle.
When we last saw this Jane version, she and Thor were still falling in love, Asgard was still surviving, and Thanos had not yet destroyed the entire universe. Love and Thunder definitely draws on Jane’s time as Thor and the only person capable of wielding Mjolnir, which is an intriguing piece of legend to bring her back into the films with. Given that Love and Thunder arrives at a moment when Marvel is going all in on its multiverse. One of the great questions surrounding this new Thor is whose reality she’s originally from and how that might affect her future in the MCU.
